What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a progressive and ultimately terminal lung disease that causes the lung tissue to scar and thicken. This makes it increasingly difficult for one's body to receive oxygen, as it hinders gas exchange in the alveoli. Common symptoms include coughing, dyspnea, and fatigue.
There are a variety of causes of Pulmonary Fibrosis. However in most cases, people are diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, the word Idiopathic referring to the fact that it is of an unknown cause. Other triggers include environmental exposures (Ex: Inhaling pollutants and toxins, ect), chest radiation therapies, and other medical conditions (Ex: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sarcoidosis, ect).
While there is currently no cure, there are treatment options available to help slow the progression of fibrosis in the lungs and manage overall condition, such as antifibrotic medications and pulmonary rehabilitation.
At Breathe Strong for Fibrosis, we are committed to raising visibility for this disease, amplifying the voices of patients, and advocating for greater research and understanding.
